reesetee commented on the word fire dust devil
The fire dust devil begins as a regular dust devil or whirlwind, a swirling column of air full of sand and debris that can be as tall as 3,000 feet and as wide as 3 to several hundred feet in diameter. They most often occur at midday in arid regions, when ground temperature is at least 68 degrees F. hotter than the air directly above. Sometimes, a dust devil picks up more than sand. It may also suck up flames from a nearby forest fire, creating what appears to be a rotating fire rope.
